Plasma carotenoids and medial temporal lobe atrophy in older adults

چکیده

Background & aims Carotenoids are vegetable pigments with neuroprotective properties. Clinical studies found efficacy of specific carotenoids on improving brain perfusion and functioning aging. However, evidence an effect neurodegeneration, which may require longer follow-up period to observe, is more limited. Leveraging biomarkers from a large population-based cohort study older adults, we investigated whether blood were associated atrophy the medial temporal lobe (a biomarker neurodegeneration in aging) over 10 years. Methods This included 461 dementia-free participants Three-City Bordeaux (aged ?65) who had plasma measured at baseline up three repeated imaging exams subsequent Results In adjusted linear mixed models, each increase 1 SD level total ?-carotene was 0.02 cm3 (95% CI, 0.001–0.04; P = 0.04) 0.01–0.04; 0.008) smaller volume loss per year, respectively. Conclusions Our results based unique long-term prospective evaluation neuroimaging suggest beneficial role for prevention age-related neurodegeneration.

Feasibility of the Medial Temporal lobe Atrophy index (MTAi) and derived methods for measuring atrophy of the medial temporal lobe

INTRODUCTION The Medial Temporal-lobe Atrophy index (MTAi), 2D-Medial Temporal Atrophy (2D-MTA), yearly rate of MTA (yrRMTA) and yearly rate of relative MTA (yrRMTA) are simple protocols for measuring the relative extent of atrophy in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) in relation to the global brain atrophy. Albeit preliminary studies showed interest of these methods in the diagnosis of Alzheimer'...

Medial temporal lobe atrophy in patients with refractory temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to assess the volumes of medial temporal lobe structures using high resolution magnetic resonance images from patients with chronic refractory medial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE). METHODS We studied 30 healthy subjects, and 25 patients with drug refractory MTLE and unilateral hippocampal atrophy (HA). We used T1 magnetic resonance images with 1 mm is...

Plasma long-chain omega-3 fatty acids and atrophy of the medial temporal lobe.

OBJECTIVE The long-chain ω-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are potential candidates for interventions to delay Alzheimer disease (AD), but evidence from clinical studies is mixed. We aimed at determining whether plasma levels of EPA or DHA predict atrophy of medial temporal lobe (MTL) gray matter regions in older subjects. METHODS A total of 281 commun...

False positives to confusable objects predict medial temporal lobe atrophy.

Animal models agree that the perirhinal cortex plays a critical role in object recognition memory, but qualitative aspects of this mnemonic function are still debated. A recent model claims that the perirhinal cortex is required to recognize the novelty of confusable distractor stimuli, and that damage here results in an increased propensity to judge confusable novel objects as familiar (i.e., ...

Progressive medial temporal lobe atrophy during preclinical Alzheimer's disease

This study examined whether longitudinal MRI trajectories in medial temporal lobe (MTL) brain regions differed among groups of cognitively normal individuals defined by their cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels when they were first enrolled (N = 207; mean clinical follow-up = 13.3 years (max = 20 years), mean MRI follow-up = 2.4 years (max = 8 years)). We first compared atrophy rates among groups ...
